'Mythical Moons '

19th January - 4th February 2012

This exhibition is a celebration of Brian Ferran's contribution to Irish Historical Painting, his 70th birthday in 2011 and his welcome return to Belfast for his first solo exhibition in over 20 years.
Brian Ferran is a painter who concerns himself with the mythical and the magical. His interest in Irish history, archaeology and mythology is communicated using recurrent themes including the journeys of Colmcille, the carvings of the Erne basin and episodes of the Tain Bo Cuailgne.

The abstract elements within this work allow the viewer to delve into this mysticism and spirituality with ease. Strong composition and texture with geometric and symbolic shapes are brought together with painterly gestures and a consummate use of colour which is vibrant and juxtaposed to support the magical quality of the work.

Born in Derry in 1940 he became an art teacher and taught for three years. A graduate of the Courtauld Institute, London and of the Brera Academy, Milan, he is a former chief executive of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Since 1963, he has undertaken public and private art commissions and has exhibited paintings regularly in Europe and North America. His works are include in numerous public collections. At Oireachtas Exhibitions, in 1965 and 1976, he won the Douglas Hyde Gold Medal for Irish Historical Painting.

In 2006 he made images for the Gaelic Arts agencies Ultach and Colmcille, in response to the stanzas of Amra Cholum Chille, Dallan’s Elegy for Columba. This poem was composed soon after St. Colmcille’s death in 597 and is the earliest datable work in Gaelic literature. The images were reproduced in a new translation by P.L.Henry, published in 2006. These 18 images and the accompanying calligraphy will be exhibited at the Linenhall Library in February 2012

An honorary member of the RHA and the RUA, he has a studio in Malin, County Donegal.
