WILLIAM CROZIER is widely accepted as one of the most influential artists living and working in Ireland today. Born in Scotland in 1930 his family came from Ballinderry in County Antrim. He was educated at the Glasgow School of Art between 1949 and 1953 and spent many years travelling and living in places such as London, Dublin, Paris and Spain. This rich experience of European art and cultures proved central to his development as an artist.
Crozier’s art is instantly recognizable. His paintings, drawings and prints create a visual language, which captures the absolute essence and look of the subject in hand. Landscape, still life, the intense experience of familiar things form part of what Crozier is about. However, fundamental to his work is the process of composition through the masterly use of colour, light and structure - the vibrancy of colour and light of his work will amaze. The exhibition in marks the publication by Lund Humphries of the first major study of Crozier’s work, with essays by S.B. Kennedy and Philip Vann and edited by art historian Katharine Crouan. This book is the first to pay substantial critical attention to Crozier, giving new insights into the history of figurative painting in Britain. It provides a detailed survey of Crozier's wide-ranging work over the last fifty years, placing it within broader European traditions as well as relating it to developments in Irish, Scottish and English art. Crozier’s work features in all major reference works on Irish and Scottish Art. Crozier has represented the UK and Ireland overseas, and has been awarded the Premio Lissone. In 1991 the Crawford Art Gallery Cork and the Royal Hibernian Academy curated a large retrospective of his work. He was elected to Aosdána in 1992 and is an honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. Crozier’s work can be seen in the major public and private collections in these islands, as well as in the national galleries of Canada, Poland and Australia, and major corporate collections such as the Allied Irish Banks, Dublin; the European Parliament in Brussels and BNP Paribas, London.
Seven new oil on canvas works painted in 2008 are included in the Exhibition along with works on paper and prints.
The exhibition continues until 5th May 2008
